It's beautifully written and wonderfully plotted. It's also the book that inspired me to become a translator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26093079.post-18329746210498840022008-08-11T10:57:00.000+01:002008-08-11T10:57:00.000+01:00Carol Shields's Unless - the protagnoist is a wri...Carol Shields's Unless - the protagnoist is a writer/critic who has also translated an important feminist study into English if I'm not mistaken.Annikahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02631786087767711681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26093079.post-32403060893393692742008-08-09T00:49:00.000+01:002008-08-09T00:49:00.000+01:00Thank you for all these suggestions!Best wishes,BJ...Thank you for all these suggestions!

Best wishes,
BJB.J. They're funny mysteries but I'm not sure how she manages to translate and travel the world at the same time, especially as this is before e-mail.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26093079.post-14477484625985760622008-08-06T06:47:00.000+01:002008-08-06T06:47:00.000+01:00In the first of three stories in 'Barins Triangel'...In the first of three stories in 'Barins Triangel', by the Swedish author Håkan Nesser, the main character is a translator. It's a well written fantasy-crime story - ever heard of a publisher/employer paying the translator's journey to and stay in a foreign country to enable him to deliver a good translation?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26093079.post-37145831922060077572008-08-06T05:25:00.000+01:002008-08-06T05:25:00.000+01:00"A Heart So White" by Javier Marías features an in..."A Heart So White" by Javier Marías features an interpreter/translator as the protagonist. It's also a wonderfully written book (translated from Spanish) -- highly recommended!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26093079.post-90433030034819643052008-08-06T05:05:00.000+01:002008-08-06T05:05:00.000+01:00Bel Canto has a protagonist who's an interpreter (...Bel Canto has a protagonist who's an interpreter (and who conveniently speaks every language relevant to the plot). It has some good translation ethics issues-- the character is a hostage, interpreting for his captors to other hostages and to the outside world. Very enjoyable book, too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
