A Video on Translators and Their Rates
You might want to laugh, or possibly cry, at this video on how not to talk to translators about their rates. We probably have all had such experiences!
Hi, B.J. Great video! Surely we all have gone through that at one time or another. Just today, I received an email (not directly addressed to me, but through a translators' directory) proposing several projects for translation from English into Spanish, and for all and each of them, "our client's budget is....". The budget came down to something like usd 0.03/source word. You can imagine where that mail went to. Directly to the trash folder.
Originally from Chicago, I lived in southern Sweden for nearly 5.5 years, and moved to southern Wales in September 2006. I completed a Ph.D. translation studies in June 2009 at Swansea University, with a dissertation on the translation of children's literature.
Now I live in Norwich, England, where I am a lecturer at the University of East Anglia, and I also work as a translator, writer, and editor.

Ugh. Unfortunately, I think too many of us have had such experiences! Glad you trashed that offer!
Best wishes,
B.J.
